O epidemie care se extinde pe un teritoriu foarte mare se numeste pandemie. Ciuma, gripa spaniola sau coronavirusul au fost clasificate ca fiind pandemii. Din cauza numarului mare de persoane decedate si a ariei intinse afectate, multi considera gripa spaniola din 1918 ca fiind cea mai mare pandemie din istoria omenirii.
